Illicit online pharmaceuticals: 500 tonnes seized in global operation

One hundred and sixteen countries participated in an INTERPOL-led international operation. Tackling the illegal trade in medicines, the week-long Pangea XI operation resulted in the seizure of 500 tons of illegal pharmaceutical products, the arrest of 859 individuals and the shutdown of 3,671 Internet links including sites, social media pages and e-commerce sites. Seized drugs included anti-inflammatory drugs, sedatives, anabolic steroids, slimming pills and HIV treatments. Though the figures for this operation are down compared to previous operations, INTERPOL officials are noting a significant improvement in the effectiveness of police and customs authorities’ actions.
